If you have curly hair, this statement requires
no explanation. Between humidity, hair stylists who are unaware that
curls shrink when they are cut, and well-meaning straight-haired
friends who eagerly offer suggestions on how to fix that curly hair
of yours, you’ve likely become convinced that curly hair was
some type of punishment and prayed that one morning you’d wake
up to a head of straight hair. You’ve likely spent thousands
of dollars on styling gels, chi irons, Japanese thermal hair treatments,
roll brushes, state-of-the-art hairdryers, and cuts by “curl
experts” – always disappointed because none ever delivered
the scarf-like hair you dreamt of. If this story sounds familiar,
we’re here to bring you a message of hope.
You were fashioned uniquely, intentionally, and by design, and each
part of you plays a role in accomplishing the purpose you were created
for. Yes – even each curl is a piece of the brilliant
masterpiece that is you. And there is no other you.
Founder Amy Broline spent the first twenty-five years of her life
battling her curly hair. It wasn’t until she was introduced
to naturallycurly.com where she found resources on how to work
with her curls instead of fight them. “I grew up in a family
where everyone had straight hair so I had no idea how to fix it.
And of course it does not come with instructions.” As a result
of her curl education, her curls were transformed and so was her
attitude. She fell in love with her curls and wanted other curly
heads to feel the same love for their hair.
Through a series of peculiar events, a company was born and a movement
began. The first time Amy wore the “to
hell with straight hair” t-shirt
was in New York City’s SoHo. “I was so nervous. I worried
that people would take it the wrong way. I didn’t want to offend
anyone, but at the same time, I wanted to give curly heads a fun
way to express their freedom in this straight-haired world.” These
worries quickly subsided after she sold three shirts within thirty
minutes of the t-shirt’s debut. Since then, the momentum has
only increased, and now – whether in Austin, Boston, Los Angeles,
or New York City – curly heads shamelessly approach Amy about
her shirt. Some simply want to buy a shirt (sometimes even off her
body!), while others want to tell their own curl liberation story.
Each instance just further evidence that indeed the curl
revolution has begun.
Since
introducing the “to hell with straight hair” line,
Amy has found deep satisfaction in seeing others embrace their curls
and enjoy being who they were created to be. Her passion to see this
truth embedded into the hearts and minds of younger girls led her
to develop a new line of kids’ t-shirts.
She invites moms and dads, grandmas and grandpas, aunts and uncles,
older sisters and brothers, and friends of all kinds to join the
curl revolution and teach the curly little ones in their lives to
love their curls, starting at a young age. “It’s never too early to start, even
if they just have one curl! They need to believe that every little
curl on their head is numbered and is part of what makes them unique
and special. Imagine the next generation of curly heads - not tempted
for one second by a flat iron. Instead, just loving how they were
made and enjoying it.” That’s our vision and we believe
that we – along with fellow curl revolutionaries - are well
on our way to making quite a kink in this straight-haired
world.
